Nurses form the largest group of medical migrants. The Registered Nursing shortage is as great in Australia as in the rest of the world, and they are needed Nationwide. You can come as an independent skilled (permanent) migrant, or you can come on a 457 ‘work visa’, which lets you work and live here for up to four years.
Either way you will need to be registered as a nurse with your chosen state authority.
Australian registered nurses have completed a three or four year Bachelor of Nursing and are IV competent; many go on to post graduate specialty certificates, though whatever overseas equivalent experience you have will be taken into account.
If you are a registered nurse in UK, Ireland, USA or Canada it should be a relatively straightforward case to transfer your registration. Send certified copies rather than original documents.
NZ Nurses have the added benefit of Trans Tasman agreements.
Registration can take between six weeks and four months, so get the forms filled in as soon as possible, so you're ready to start work by the time your visa comes through. Forms and info are available from the individual state registration boards:
You'll need to collate original copies of references and work statements, and certified photocopies of your registration certificate direct from your nursing board (address this first as this can take time), and a small fee is payable. Generally allow six to seven months from the beginning to the end of the process.
Registered nurses work shifts in thousands of different sorts of hospitals, from the major teaching hospitals in every capital to smaller aged care units. Shift times vary, but usually run from around 7am to 1.30 — 3.30pm or 1 — 3pm to 9 — 10.30pm or 9 — 10pm through to the morning shift. Emergency and Intensive care & psychiatric shifts can be 12 hours.
Pay scales vary between state to state, usually on a ‘service’ scale. Your overseas experience will be taken into account. In Queensland, for example, registered nurses are in strong demand and the salaries reflect this. Queensland has one of the most competitive rates of pay for registered nurses in Australia. For example a registered nurse with 2 years experience could expect to start at around A$48,838 rising to in excess of A$58,500 with shift allowance and superannuation, this is full time equivalent rate and casual loading applies for casual work. Bear in mind that the cost of living Is much lower in most parts of Australia than in the UK.
Different specialisations are in demand in different states and areas, some more than others.
Rural areas tend to have a great demand for registered nurses than major cities, where there may be plenty.

The Working Holiday Maker Visa provides an opportunity for people between 18 and 30 to holiday in Australia and supplement their travel funds through employment. You can do any kind of work but work for more than SIX months with any one employer is not permitted.
